Tip Box Design Ideas from Our Workshop

Over the past years we have built hundreds of wooden tip boxes for cafes, restaurants, hotels and balloon companies, and no two of them looked the same. Each one starts with a logo and ends as a carved wooden object that sits on a counter for years.

How a Logo Becomes a Carved Tip Box

A tip box design begins with your logo file, not with the box. We take the vector drawing, decide which parts should stand in relief and which should be recessed, then cut those layers into solid wood and colour them by hand.

Single colour logos are usually carved and left in the natural wood tone, so the grain shows through the letters. Multi colour logos are built up in layers, which is why a flame, an animal or a coffee cup can read clearly from across a room.

A carved logo also outlasts a printed one. Stickers and printed panels rub off on a counter that is wiped down several times a day; a shape cut into the wood itself does not.

Tip Boxes for Hotels: Why One Is Rarely Enough

Hotels usually order more than one tip box, because the guest meets a different team in each part of the building. A box at reception goes to the front desk staff, a box in the restaurant to the service team, and a box in the spa or hamam to the therapists working there.

Splitting the boxes this way keeps the tips with the people who earned them, and it saves the staff an awkward conversation at the end of a shift. For a hotel ordering several boxes at once, we usually keep the shape identical and change only the wording under the logo.

Tip Boxes for Hot Air Balloon Companies

A hot air balloon flight looks like one pilot and one basket, but around ten people make it happen. The crew inflates the envelope, follows the flight on the ground, secures the landing and then packs several hundred kilos of fabric back into the trailer.

Balloon companies in Cappadocia order tip boxes for exactly that reason: the guest sees the pilot, but the tip is shared with a crew that has been working since before sunrise. These boxes usually carry the company logo and travel between the launch field and the office.

Cafes, Burger Shops and Ice Cream Counters

Food counters are where a tip box gets handled most, so these designs tend to be bolder. A burger shop logo works well in strong relief; an ice cream counter usually asks for lighter colours; an Italian style coffee bar often wants the wood left visible around a small carved emblem.

If You Take the Bill at the Table, Add a Bill Box

Not every tip reaches the counter. In restaurants where the bill is settled at the table, a wooden bill box does the same job as the tip box, one step earlier in the evening. Many of our customers order the two together so the logo and the finish match.
